The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) and are working together to study water use in households connected to public water supplies, but also own an irrigation well used strictly for lawns or gardens in Polk and Sarasota counties. The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of water use in these types of wells.

Researchers will place non-invasive flow meters on the wells and the data will be collected once every two months. The data will be published but will be used for research purposes only. Personal information about participants will be kept strictly confidential. Participants benefit by learning about seasonal trends in their well water use. Also, issues with pump operation and well maintenance will be monitored and identified.

For those interested in participating in the study, please contact Scott McBride at wmcbride@usgs.gov or (813) 363-5665 for more information.
