Lakeland receives $500K for Se7en Wetlands center

With the state’s 2019-20 budget approved, Lakeland employees were surprised to learn funding for Se7en Wetlands didn’t get vetoed by Gov. Ron DeSantis this year.

Lakeland will receive a $500,000 state grant to further transform the 1,640-acre wastewater treatment area that is now open to the public as a park.

“We’re very excited to get this $500,000 grant,” Pam Page, the city’s deputy park and recreation director, said.

The city had initially requested $2.5 million, which was sponsored by state Sen. Ben Albritton, R-Lakeland, to design and construct an educational center. The building will provide classroom space to teach people about water management practices, Florida’s natural habitat and ecosystems.
