Third Street baffle box project is a retrofit of an existing baffle box structure located on Third Street S.E. in Winter Haven, Florida. The old and outdated structure was constructed in 2004 under a permit issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The existing structure is a 12 ft. deep concrete vault measuring 30 ft. in length by 10 ft. wide. In March 2014 Polk County contracted to retrofit the vault with a newly engineered structure with prefabricated nutrient separating baffle box design. The new design has a three chamber catch basket system. The first chamber collects the heavy sand. The center basket catch's discarded items such as Styrofoam cups, plastic bottles and organic debris (leaves). The third chambers collects all other items that may flow over the baffles during high water flows. The extent of this project involves demolition and removal of the existing filter components and concrete work to prepare the structure for the installation of the new filter unit by Suntree. The construction of a second baffle wall and reshaping of the vault floors with a continuous slope and smooth finish are critical. Monthly maintenance is conducted and the chambers are vacuumed out every two months. The system collects approximately 40,000 lbs. of debris per year prior to the stormwater discharging into Lake Lulu. |
