Description
The Elizabeth Place Hydrologic Enhancement project was constructed within a 13 month period beginning in December of 2011 and completed in December 2012. This project is located within unincorporated Polk County adjacent to Banana Lake a 242 acre water body that outfalls directly to Lake Hancock in the Peace River watershed. The FDEP has established Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for both lakes, requiring a reduction in the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus contributions from the watershed. This project focuses on creating an urban wetland/flow-through marsh to treat stormwater runoff to improve the quality of water discharged to the Upper Peace River system and ultimately into Charlotte Harbor. The project utilized 4.73 acres of land which was acquired by Polk County due to neighborhood flooding to capture runoff from 33.6 acres. During construction the scope of the project was expanded to treat runoff from an additional 11.7 acres from the adjacent neighborhood.
