Description
Seminole Pond is a dry detention pond located on Seminole Road in Babson Park Polk County Florida. The system was constructed to collect sediments which were being discharged directly to Crooked Lake from stormwater runoff from the adjacent orange groves. The pond is approximately 1 acre in size. Sediment collected in the pond is removed on an annual basis. Seminole Pond was permitted through SWFWMD in 1996 and the project was constructed and completion was August 1997. Seminole Pond was retrofitted after the 2004 hurricane season. Three separate hurricane systems passed over this area of Polk County. The excessive rainfall contributed to extreme flow conditions generated by the drainage basin, with wave action and heightened elevations at Crooked Lake which caused a failure to the water quality system. Seminole pond was reengineered and retrofitted. The project was completed August 2005. The sediment removed from this system is the total amount removed since 1997.
